Turkish baked meat and cheese pie (tepsi boreli) recipe



Recipe for turkish baked meat and cheese pie (tepsi boreli) in our easy ethnic recipes collection. This very popular dish is cooked in a variety of ways using different ingredients. It can be made with cheese, potatoes, vegetables, meat or a combination of these ingredients. It can be cooked in oil, fried, or baked. No matter what, it's always delicious.

Recipe ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 large onion, chopped fine
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced and mixed with ø teaspoon salt
  • 8 ounces ground beef or lamb (*)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1, 16 ounces, package phyllo dough, thawed

(*) To make this a vegetarian dish, omit the lamb, cinnamon, and herbs and add 3 cups fresh spinach, 1 tablespoon feta cheese, 1 pinch grated nutmeg, and 3 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese.

How to make turkish baked meat and cheese pie (tepsi boreli)

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  • In a large skillet, heat butter over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, and salt. Saute for about 7 minutes, or until onions are soft and translucent.
  • Add meat and stir, cooking for just under 5 minutes.
  • Mix in cinnamon, parsley, dill, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat.
  • In a small bowl, beat eggs with milk and oil.
  • Lightly butter a 9 x 12 inch baking dish. Carefully press one sheet of phyllo into bottom of pan. The sheet will overlap the sides of the dish. Pour a small amount of milk mixture onto phyllo, tilting pan from side to side to moisten dough. Add four more layers of phyllo, brushing each one with milk mixture before adding next one.
  • Add another sheet of phyllo and cover with half meat mixture. Then add four more sheets, again brushing each one with milk mixture.
  • Add another sheet of phyllo dough and cover with remaining meat. Top with five more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with milk mixture.
  • Fold edges of phyllo dough into pan. Brush top thoroughly with milk and egg mixture.
  • Bake for 45 minutes, or until pie is puffy and golden brown. Serve hot or cold.
