Korean five-grain dish (o guk pap) recipe



Recipe for korean five-grain dish (o guk pap) in our easy ethnic recipes collection. This hearty mixture is served for Tae-bo-rum. It is usually accompanied by zucchini or other squash, and dried, white daikon radish. The finished dish has a light lavender color due to the natural purple of the black beans.

Recipe ingredients

  • 1/4 cup dry black beans
  • 1/4 cup dry red beans
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/4 cup pearl barley
  • 1/4 cup millet
  • 1 cup short-grain white rice
  • 1/4 cup pine nuts

How to make korean five-grain dish (o guk pap)

  • Rinse the black and red beans and place in a large saucepan. Cover with water and bring beans to boil over high heat. Boil 1 minute. Take pan off heat, cover, and let stand 1 hour.
  • Drain beans. Rinse beans, drain again, and add 3 cups water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then cover and simmer over low heat 45 minutes.
  • Stir barley into bean mixture and cook another 10 minutes.
  • Stir millet into mixture. Cook another 20 minutes.
  • Mix in rice and cook 20 to 25 minutes, checking after 10 minutes to see whether you need to add a little more water. Cook until rice and beans are tender.
  • While grains cook, toast pine nuts in dry skillet until golden. Serve in large bowl garnished with pine nuts.

Preparation time: 10 to 15 minutes
(plus 1 hour standing time)
Cooking time: 2 hours
Serves 6 to 8
